Today, Hungarian public education pays limited attention to the history and culture of the Roma. During the evaluation of our Holocaust teacher training programme we received several feedbacks that emphasized the need to expand the knowledge of the students (and teachers) regarding Roma culture and history. As a result of this TLI with the involvement of Roma authors and experts aims to prepare easily accessible educational materials that can be applicable both in formal and non-formal educational settings.
The preparation of such material has been started in 2020. In 2023, TLI initiated a new project to develop an illustrated pocket book series covering different aspects of Roma Culture (e.g.: Roma history, art, poetry, music) and targeting young people.
Based on the background research, in 2025 we started developing the concept and defining the content focus of the first book, which elaborates on the topic of the Roma Movement until 1994. In the process a wide range of experts collaborate: Roma activist, Phd experts and Phd students, and visual artists. The main objective of the project is to present the Roma Movement through the narratives of Roma experts and in doing so to contribute to public education, the production of Roma knowledge and its recognition.
The preparation of the first book, which covers the Roma Movement up to 1994, is still in progress.
