The Tom Lantos Institute (TLI) is an international human and minority rights organisation based in Budapest (Hungary) that works globally and regionally. In Central and Eastern Europe TLI focuses on Jewish and Roma communities, as well as Hungarian and other ethnic or national, linguistic and religious minorities. As a research and education platform, TLI aims to bridge the gaps between research and policy, norms and practice.
Job Specification
The Grants and Monitoring Manager (GMM) plays a key role in grants management and fundraising by supporting programme staff in the development of funding applications and the implementation of grant-funded activities. The GMM is also responsible for the monitoring of all TLI projects, ensuring their cost-effective planning and timely implementation. The GMM works primarily with the Programme Managers and reports to the Deputy Director of TLI.
Duties and Responsibilities
- a) Coordinating grant applications and fundraising activities:
- Identifying and tracking relevant international funding opportunities.
- Ensuring compliance with donor guidelines and reporting requirements.
- Preparing and compiling grant applications in collaboration with programme staff.
- Training and mentoring project staff in grant writing and fundraising techniques.
- Guiding programme staff through the full grant application and reporting processes.
- Serving as a liaison with donors and partners.
- b) Monitoring and assisting programmes across all phases of the project cycle:
- Assisting programme staff to ensure that projects adhere to sound planning, implementation and monitoring processes.
- Assist in the planning stages of projects as required.
- Monitoring project progress using tools, indicators, and regular review meetings.
- Assisting programme staff in budget oversight through regular budget-versus-actual reviews.
- Assisting programme managers in their work with external consultants, including reviewing contracts, fees, and terms of reference in line with grants requirements.
- Collaborating with programme managers in project development, including proposal writing and budget planning.
- Providing support in the preparation of high-quality annual activity and donor reports.
Required Skills and Experience
- Graduate or postgraduate degree in political science (conflict resolution, nationalism studies), international law (human rights, minority protection), international relations, sociology, or another relevant field.
- At least 2–3 years of experience in a similar role or a minimum of 5 years of experience in project management. Experience in the field of human/minority rights is desirable.
- Proven track record in successful grant writing in human rights or related fields; fundraising experience is an asset.
- Strong coordinating and team management abilities.
- Excellent strategic thinking and analytical skills.
- Demonstrated project management competencies.
- Strong writing skills, particularly in drafting funding applications, reports and relevant donor documentation.
- Fluency in English, including excellent writing skills. Hungarian is desirable.
- Clear and confident communicator, able to explain complex grant proposals and project ideas to donors and partners;
- Excellent organisational and planning abilities; capable of multitasking and prioritising under tight deadlines.
- Self-motivated and collaborative team player.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and in a multicultural environment.
- Strong commitment to human rights and social justice.
- Proficiency in MS Office and familiarity with project management tools or platforms.
